Tar Art is the Mecca that every hitchhiker will want to visit. The motto reads: eat or be eaten. The highway code is a lifeline for those of us who stray off the beaten track. But you don't have to be a cat or a hedgehog to experience this asphalt warzone.
But when the rules are turned upside down, it tells a different story. Behind the scenes, we meet multi-media artist and designer Nik Steven and inventor of Tar Art!
Life is a roller coaster, says Nik. By re-arranging the traffic symbols and inventing some code of my own, I have created a language that portrays tragedy and comedy.
My own path is partly to blame: I nearly didn't make it into this world! My parents were driving from England to France. My mother was eight and a half months pregnant. Torrential rain caused my dad to skid off the road and crash into a lamp post. He broke seven ribs and my mother broke nine. It was a miracle I survived. From that day on, the seed was firmly planted. I am a gypsy at heart. Asphalt is my world. It is time to move on.
