The first company that uses Roblox as a game development platform, Gamefam, is once again making waves in the web3 gaming realm. This time, having joined forces with Paramount's Nickelodeon, the renowned blockchain games developer is to bring the iconic SpongeBob and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon franchises to the Roblox metaverse. Both gamified experiences are scheduled to launch by the end of 2023.
For now, it's too early for the details, but the two releases will definitely concern the SpongeBob SquarePants, and TMNT eternal Nickelodeon cartoons, allowing players to interact with their favored characters in the metaverse.
It's worth noting that despite being one of the most popular cartoon characters of all time, both TMNT and SpongeBob are currently poorly represented in web3 and gaming. Thus, the yellow square Sponge only appears in one single SpongeBob game in Nickelodeon’s Nickverse. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, in its turn, can currently boast somewhat better coverage, with an official NFT collection on Recur and the only game titled Turtle Trouble of 2007.
However, the partnership with Roblox is going to dramatically change this unfortunate omission, bringing a huge, multigenerational army of cartoon fans to web3 gaming. According to the devs, the new Roblox games might include some features from the already existing experiences, alongside some new exciting quests and features.
“Expanding both franchises (e.g. SpongeBob and TMNT) to new platforms is a critical part of our gaming strategy. Gamefam’s expertise in creating and managing live-operated worlds at scale makes them an ideal partner for us to connect audiences with our content on Roblox,” Paramount’s Senior Vice President Doug Rose said.
Being not new to Roblox, Gamefam can currently boast over 30 experiences in the metaverse in a variety of niches, topping the platform's rankings.
