The Oscar-winning actor and eco-activist Javier Bardem is now looking in the direction of NFTs. The initiative bears charitable purposes. Thus, the renowned actor has partnered with the Ojos del Mundo (Eyes of the World) for a fundraising campaign, Iris of the World, to auction off the image of his iris as NFT.
“Being able to see, to hear, to touch, to feel: these are things that we don’t really appreciate until we lose them. Regaining access to everything you feel through seeing, which has such an impact on our emotions and sensibility, is an emotional and spiritual transformation,” Javier Bardem told The Guardian.
The close-up image of Javier's iris will be sold as a one-of-one non-fungible token that comes paired with a photographic print authenticated by the actor. Whoever acquires an NFT will own the exclusive rights to it. This NFT will be as unique as an iris itself, as there are no two alike. The auction will go in euros with a starting bid of €9,000.
All the proceeds from selling the outstanding photo artwork will be donated to aid people in developing countries to restore eyesight lost due to serious eye diseases like cataracts, infections, and more.
As for Ojos del Mundo, the organization was founded back in 2001 in Spain and specializes in treating vulnerable people with avoidable blindness. During over two decades of existence, the Eyes of the World Foundation helped to restore the sight of around 37,000 people and trained 13,000 specialists throughout the globe.
