Tory Lanez is the stage name of Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, a Canadian rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He was born in 1992 and moved to Florida with his family. His childhood was spent moving across different locations in America following his father, a travelling preacher. Lanez experimented with mixtapes and freestyle covers of tracks from musical icons who inspired him. Uploading the works on his YouTube channel got the attention of Sean Kingston, who then gave him a platform on Justin Bieber’s tour. Later he signed a record deal with Sean Kingston’s Time is Money Entertainment label, in which he released several mixtapes.
Tory has worked on independent projects and collaborations with celebrities like Lil Wayne, 6ix9ine, ASAP FergBenny, G-Eazy, and more. Awards under his name include multiple Juno Awards and nominations to the BET Awards, The Grammy Awards, and NAACP Image Awards. Tory made his first NFT drop before releasing his Playboy Album in the Spring of 2021.
