Jonathan Thunder is a multi-disciplinary artist born in 1977 in Red lake Ojibwe, Northern Minnesota. He is well-known for his surreal paintings, animated and experimental films, digital installations, and illustration work. He has been to the Institute of American Indian art (IAIA) in Santa Fe, NM, and has done Visual Effects and Motion Graphics at the International Institute in Minneapolis, MN.
He uses his social, political, environmental, and spiritual climate to create the storyline of his artwork. He incorporates influences from the structure of his dreams to produce imagery that is surreal and imaginative. Jonathan addresses the subject matter from loss and recovery of indigenous sovereignty using his large-scale painting with surreal imagery and merges his personalities to create unique artworks. He has also been privileged to win several awards, such as the 2020 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award for painting
