Inspiration
“One, No One and One Hundred Thousand” (1926) by Luigi Pirandello tells the story of Vitangelo Moscarda, whose life is disrupted when his wife casually remarks that his nose tilts slightly to one side.
This seemingly trivial observation triggers a profound existential crisis. Moscarda realizes that the image he has of himself is entirely different from the many images others have of him.
He becomes obsessed with the idea that he is not a single, unified individual, but “one hundred thousand” different versions of himself—one for each person who perceives him. Eventually, he concludes that he is “no one,” since no stable or definitive identity truly exists.
Through irony and psychological depth, Pirandello explores the relativity of identity, the conflict between self-perception and social perception, the fragmentation of the self, and the masks imposed by society. In the end, Moscarda rejects social roles and expectations, choosing a life detached from conventional identity.
