Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906), also known as the ‘The Father of Modern Indian Art’ was an iconic Indian painter who brought a historic turn in the art of India. He united Hindu mythological subject matter with European realism. Ravi Varma made use of oil painting and lithographic methods to bring a wind of change; focusing on the details, the play of light and shadows and adding depth by using perspective. Many of his artworks are either part of royal collections and housed in palaces in India or owned by private collectors.
