The UK-based luxury department store Selfridges is about to claim itself as the world's first department store to sell NFTs over the counter. The boutique will be offering over 1,800 fixed-price NFTs with a tag ranging from $2,700 to $137,000. Moreover, the buyers won't need any cryptocurrency experience to participate, as all the items will be available for purchase via usual bank cards.

To enter the metaverse with the “Universe” project, Selfridges teams up with Substance – a digital platform engaged in the NFTs and VR environment development on Decentraland.

The in-store and digital exhibition will feature 55 works by the 20th century Op Art iconic artist Victor Vasarely with designs from Paco Rabanne. The latter will offer to purchase digital assets of Paco Rabanne’s spring-summer 2022 collection, inspired by Vasarely’s artistic genius. Some of the NFTs sold by Selfridges will feature the first 12 dresses created by the fashion designer at the very start of his tremendous career. The tokens are planned to drop between January 28 and March 12.

Selected Paco Rabanne's NFTs will be accompanied with their physical copies, while crypto assets allow their owners to adjust their avatars and create outstanding pictures wearing Paco's dresses online. Funds raised will go to the Foundation Vasarely Museum in Aix-en-Provence.

"Selfridges’ in-store pop-up is designed to make purchasing NFTs as familiar as shopping for clothing in a store," Jason Attard, founder and CEO of Substance, explained. "The ability to purchase NFTs by credit card alone can make the technology more accessible," he added.

Indeed, when a customer buys an NFT, Substance automatically creates a crypto wallet for holding it, while skipping the long process of verification.
