As the Ottoman army approached, the cathedral's bells were silenced, lest the silence provoke the enemy. But when the siege was defeated, the people of Vienna heralded victory with bells. The Pummerin, Austria's largest bell, was melted down from Ottoman artillery shells, turning the enemy's weapons into a symbol of freedom.
