Hikikomori ( ひきこもり ), loner or "modern-day hermit" is someone who seeks total withdrawal from society and extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement.
One can be surrounded by people, yet their thoughts and feelings may be isolated, they may even feel isolated from their own body. Trauma is one such experience that can make the body feel isolated from the mind and the self. When we think about trauma, we emphasize the damage it has done to us because we hate it so much. What we forget to acknowledge is the growth that takes place in the body.
'Hikikomori' is about honoring the growth that takes place in our bodies when we experience trauma. These hikikomoris find beauty and solace in their own company. They evanesce into a phantasmic world where they embrace the bloom in their gloom and take the viewers on an odyssey in the jungle of ruminations and dreams.
