How long does a name written in the sand last, when no one is there to observe it?
Effimero takes its name from the Italian word for “ephemeral”: something fleeting, transient, destined to pass. The work reflects on the impermanence of things, beginning with life itself. We follow a course, leave traces, and disappear. Like the destiny of a name written in the sand on a deserted beach.
Created for Responsive Dreams in Barcelona, the work responds to an invitation to develop long-form generative art that adapts to screens of any proportion. Effimero carries that invitation into a physical medium. While screens present digital artworks, a neighboring plotter draws in Molochite sand, accompanied by its digital counterpart.
The drawing in sand gives the work's central idea a physical form. The surface is never smoothed between drawings. New paths disturb earlier marks, and traces accumulate without reaching a final state. Chosen for its balance of friction and legibility, Molochite gives each drawing a clear but temporary form.
The plotter follows a path already established by code, suggesting a life whose course may already be decided. The path is known before it is followed, inviting an open question about fate and the experience of living a life that might be predetermined. Each passage leaves a mark but cannot preserve it. Effimero finds its fullest expression in this changing surface, where drawing, persistence, and disappearance occupy the same space.
