FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the governing body behind international football, has dived deeper into the Web3 realm. According to a recent update, the association announced that its NFT platform, FIFA Collect, will migrate from the Algorand blockchain to a new one, dubbed the FIFA Blockchain, on May 20th.
Launched in 2022, FIFA Collect allows football fans to own iconic moments from football games, whether it’s clubs, national federations, or international matches. They allow football enthusiasts to connect with their favorite players, moments, and the game in general. These moments are represented as licensed digital collectibles. These collectibles are categorized into four rarity tiers – Common, Rare, Epic, and Iconic. Holders can flaunt or trade these NFTs on the secondary marketplace.
Through the Right to Buy (RTB) digital asset, FIFA Collect allows holders to purchase tickets exclusively for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. This means that holders can buy tickets before they become available to the general public. Over the past few months, FIFA has onboarded various football teams into the NFT realm through its products.
At the time of its inception, FIFA harnessed the layer-1 Algorand network to launch its FIFA Collect platform on the blockchain. This meant that those who wanted to buy or sell moments must use digital wallets compatible with the blockchain network, such as Pera and Defly. However, FIFA is now moving to its dedicated FIFA Blockchain, which is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), a computational engine that enables smart contract integration with the Ethereum mainnet.
Since FIFA is migrating to a new blockchain, users must transfer their digital collectibles to wallets that are compatible with the new blockchain. A popular choice is MetaMask or any EVM-supported wallet. The announcement added that moving to its own blockchain “will enable new product features, performance improvements, and long-term growth.” Overall, the football-themed project is poised for “future innovations” with its incoming foray into the EVM-compatible blockchain.
By migrating to its own blockchain and introducing new features, FIFA aims to add more value for its football-loving audience. This move could enable the football-themed project to tap into Ethereum’s massive user base, thereby growing its ecosystem.
