The legendary magazine Sports Illustrated has just announced its Sports Illustrated Covers NFT collection. The drop will consist of the most iconic covers, starring the greatest athletes throughout over 60-year-old history.

For this collection, the magazine has teamed up with OneOf NFT platform, 3D animation artists Jonathan Winbush and its mother company Authentic Brands Group. According to the Sports Illustrated representatives, it's time to pay tribute to the legendary athletes and their destinations by perpetuating them in the metaverse.

The first batch of NFTs will feature the digitized covers starring NFL titans: Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, and Dick Butkus paired with the reimagined 3D versions. The rest of the collection will feature sports idols, including Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, Wayne Gretzky, Dale Earnhardt Jr, as well as Dick Butkus.

Sports Illustrated decided to make its tokens affordable to all fans by dropping them only for $25 per piece. However, as some tokenized covers will be rarer than others, the prices will be varying from one NFT to another.

One of the magazine's co-founders Josh James commented on this partnership: “This collaboration with Sports Illustrated to mint legendary athletes’ NFTs on the energy-efficient Polygon blockchain is the perfect way to launch our Sports and Lifestyle marketplace. We are excited for the opportunity to engage millions of sports fans worldwide.

Are you an avid sports rooter? Mark your calendars so as not to oversleep the high-profile collection which is said to drop right after the Super Bowl, on February 13th.
