Full Artist Statement:
In my artwork, titled “The Tale of the Black Whale,” I’ve created a compelling and thought-provoking scene. As I gaze upon it, I see an ocean of turbulent waves and swells, with scattered Lamborghinis, plastic waste, and a small plastic ship floating on its surface. In the distance, my eyes are drawn to a massive whale fin rising from the water. I’ve intentionally played with proportions here, making it seem like an enormous whale, although in reality, it’s composed of small plastic toys adrift in the ocean.
Through this imagery, I aim to convey a powerful message about the pressing environmental issues of our time, particularly the alarming problem of ocean pollution. By juxtaposing luxury cars and plastic debris with the iconic image of a whale, I hope to emphasize the urgent need for collective action to address these environmental challenges. I want viewers to reflect on the consequences of human actions on the natural world. The overall aesthetic of the piece is reminiscent of 18th-century ship paintings, adding a historical context that deepens the impact of the contemporary message.
In the creation of this artwork, titled ‘The Tale of the Black Whale,’ I embarked on a year-long journey that began with painstakingly hand-drawing the entire scene on my iPad using the Procreate app. As the project progressed, the demands of my daily life made it increasingly challenging to devote the necessary time to bring my vision to life. However, thanks to the invaluable assistance of AI technology, which I deeply appreciate, I found a new way to complete this piece while still maintaining a handcrafted feel.
The artwork’s genesis involved multiple stages, a variety of media, and various forms of support. Nevertheless, it all culminated on the iPad, where the final strokes and details were meticulously refined. This fusion of traditional hand-drawn techniques with the aid of AI tools not only expedited the creative process but also allowed me to infuse a human touch into the work.
The resulting composition invites viewers into a visually arresting narrative—a vast ocean teeming with tumultuous waves, interspersed with unexpected elements. Lamborghinis, symbols of opulence, float alongside plastic waste and a diminutive plastic ship, drawing attention to the stark contrast between luxury and environmental degradation. Emerging from the horizon, a colossal whale fin commands attention, challenging us to reflect on our societal choices.
This artwork serves as a testament to both the dedication invested in its creation and the remarkable potential of the synergy between human creativity and artificial intelligence in the world of art.
In ‘The Tale of the Black Whale,’ I draw upon my unique dual heritage, having been born in Africa and raised in Germany. This artwork serves as a poignant commentary on societal disparities, particularly the challenges faced by individuals of African descent in the financial world and society at large. With personal experiences from both worlds, I offer a perspective that underscores global inequalities. Through this piece, I aim to provoke thought and discussion on power dynamics, privilege, and environmental impact, transcending borders and challenging societal norms. My artistic journey blends diverse cultural backgrounds with creative expression, sparking critical reflection on the pressing issues of our time.
