On February 23rd, Sotheby's auction house will host a never-before-seen evening auction dedicated exclusively to Crypto Punks NFTs, dubbed Punk It! The bidding will feature only one but no less valuable lot, expected to go under the hammer for $20/30 million! The prediction of the upcoming lot to become the highest-ever valued single lot of 104 NFTs auctioned is not groundless. The prior sale of CryptoPunk #7523 for $11.8 million in June 2021 was a real splash!
Now, to the lot. Having launched back in 2017 as the first-ever NFT avatars by Larva Labs, Crypto Punks are among the most valuable tokens today, symbolizing the global non-fungible movement. Nowadays, almost 5 years after the flagship project's launch, the largest Crypto Punks collection of 104 tokens, owned by the anonymous collector “0x650d,”, will be auctioned off via Sotheby’s. What is really outstanding about these exact 104 Punks is that they have been bought all together with a single transaction registered on the blockchain. The same provenance for all 104 CryptoPunks NFTs makes this collection one-of-a-kind.
Another groundbreaking feature about the lot lies in the diversity embedded in the original algorithm. Thus, the present group of 104 CryptoPunks represents a wide range of punk-related traits, from mohawk haircuts to sunglasses, cigarettes, a collection of hats, and other accessories that differentiate them.
Besides, preceding the live auction on February 23rd, Sotheby’s will host a special live panel discussion on the history of NFTs and CryptoPunks accordingly. The discussion will feature the skyrocketing rise of Crypto Punks, recollection of the flagship collectibles' celebrity holders, including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, and others.
The current collection will be sold as a single lot at Sotheby's via live auction. However, the flagship event, alongside featuring the most significant and high-profile sales for Contemporary and Modern art, will be aired from Sotheby’s New York galleries as well as the virtual exhibition at the auction house’s HQ in Decentraland.
