Everyday we are bombarded with information that forms our perception of reality. This version of reality is incomplete. It omits information we don’t see, among many things the Fairies of the Mushroom Forest.
Mushroom People prompts us to escape the most commonly accepted versions of reality.
The forest is filled with beings both seen and unseen; these fairies or elementals exist beneath our visible perception.
These images remind us of the wonder, idealism and bliss often found in nature.
Elementals exist in the folklore of every culture and region throughout history.
They may be small or large; they have different physical appearances. They can be a strong and active force in their environment.
The unifying trait of elementals is their connection to nature.
Elementals are similar to humans; they can be good or evil. They can be mischievous, empathetic, jealous, and act in self interest. Like humans they are flawed.
These images were created with wet plate collodion process, a 19th century photographic process which only is sensitive to blue, violet and ultraviolet wavelengths. This process adds and subtracts from the visible spectrum, revealing a world humans cannot see with their eyes alone.
From the perspective of humans, mushrooms are small and grow on the ground. They are edible, delicate, harmless and have no central nervous system. How does our world view change when we see a world of elemental beings living among the mushrooms?
Mushroom People is intended to disrupt the most common ways we form our realities.
