Ondel-ondel are giant Betawi puppets that have become a cultural icon of Jakarta. They are often performed in pairs (male and female) at festivals, folk festivals, weddings, or to welcome guests. Originally, they served as wards of disaster or as guardians of the village from evil spirits. They wear red (male) and white (female) masks and are accompanied by traditional music such as Tanjidor and Gambang Kromong.
