Getty Images teamed up with Candy Digital to drop the NFT collection of exclusive photographs, dubbed the ‘Ghost in the Machine’. This is the fourth joint initiative between the two brands within their ongoing partnership.
The upcoming collection, dropping just in time for Halloween, features 20 artworks that delve into the historical roots of spirit photography. There are also four never-before-released photographs from the Hulton Archive within the series.
In the 19th century, experimenting with spirit photography as a means to connect with ethereal dimensions was a common practice. Spirit photography became a portal to another realm, acting as proof of the afterlife. Therefore, the ‘Ghost in the Machine’ series is aimed at exploring the lasting influence of early paranormal photography on today's culture. The legendary images from the 19th and early 20th centuries that make part of the series help to examine the techniques employed by photographers of that era, including the usage of double exposure and physical manipulation, to evoke invisible dimensions.
The release of the ‘Ghost in the Machine’ collection is scheduled for October 25th, featuring two offers:
Ahead of the drop, starting from October 19th, collectors are invited to claim a digital artwork, inspired by the world of the paranormal, for free.
In addition to the ‘Ghost in the Machine’ collection and a free-to-claim artwork, Candy Digital will also release Nightmare Logic on October 25th. This is a zine and digital exhibition delving into the influence of spirit photography through the creations of modern artists who mainly use cameras and code to shed light on the mysterious and otherworldly.
