When Chae Tongyull first arrived in America from Korea in the 1970s, he landed in New Orleans, a city already humming with music. There, he came across two elderly musicians on a bench in the French Quarter, one playing trumpet, the other guitar. They barely spoke, but their instruments traded phrases like old friends in conversation.
“French Quarter Blues” is based on Chae’s original oil painting of that moment from nearly 50 years ago. This 59-piece collection has two visual categories, from moody blue to bold primary colors. Each piece reimagines that quiet duet with a different rhythm and tone. Like jazz itself, the forms shift, but the soul stays the same—an ode to memory, improvisation, and the art of playing for nothing but the moment.
