Multidisciplinary artist Peter Saville, drummer Stephen Morris, and the Joy Division Archive teamed up to launch an audiovisual NFT project aimed at paying tribute to the iconic rock band's legacy.
Dubbed 'CP1919', it will commemorate the 44th anniversary since the release of Joy Division’s album “Unknown Pleasures” by Factory Records. It’s worth mentioning that the name of the project mirrors “the original pulse of the collapsed star” which was created by Peter Saville for the cover of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album.
The upcoming release will feature two NFTs:
Both artworks feature 3D animated visuals created by Peter Saville, accompanied by a recently recorded soundtrack by Stephen Morris. It also incorporates unheard vocal samples by Ian Curtis, from the late Joy Division. The white and black visuals are inspired by the original Unknown Pleasures cover.
CP1919: Sweeping Sun White 2023 NFT will be priced at $100 per edition, available for purchase via crypto and fiat. Each collector will also get a limited-edition t-shirt, matching the digital artwork.
CP1919: Sweeping Sun Black 2023 will be available at an online auction hosted by Pace Verso. This NFT differs from an open edition by a unique ambient soundtrack, featuring previously unreleased Joy Division vocal fragments. The highest bidder will be the only one to get access to this iconic piece and the unique audio. The piece will be delivered to a lucky owner on a commemorative hard drive in a bespoke case.
A share of the proceeds generated from the sales of CP1919 artworks will be donated to the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a UK-based nonprofit committed to preventing suicide. This donation will be made in memory of Ian Curtis, the former frontman of Joy Division.
Pace Gallery has also shared an interview of Morris, Saville, and Joy Division fan and renowned physicist Brian Cox. A four-minute film shows that there are two phrases from the live version of Joy Division’s “Atrocity Exhibition” song featured as vocal samples for the “CP1919”. The recordings had never been released.
The “CP1919” NFT collection will go live on October 9th by Pace Verso, a web3 art subsidiary of Pace Gallery during Frieze London.
Mark your calendars to get a piece of audiovisual history!
