U.S.-based video game development company Zynga, the creator behind FarmVille and Words With Friends, is set to unveil its new blockchain game. Dubbed Sugartown, it will feature Ethereum NFTs, the first-of-its-kind initiative coming from Zynga.
Sugartown’s game lore portrays a wormhole that was opened by three farm animals, led by Mayor Mel. The portal links to another dimension filled with creatures called Oras which have now made their way into Sugartown, turning it into a gamified realm.
Along with the fun-filled gaming experience offered within Sugartown, Zynga will also unveil 10,000 Ethereum-based Ora NFTs before the year ends. Access to the game will be open for owners of Ora NFTs only. These digital collectibles will also act as a key to the free-to-play minigames within Sugartown. In addition, Zynga will also allow Ora NFT holders to stake their assets and receive an in-game currency, dubbed Sugar. Although Sugar is not a cryptocurrency, it will serve extensive use within the gaming ecosystem.
The game developer noted that Sugartown will be available solely via web browsers. The game will be released on a yet-to-be-disclosed date.
Stressing the mission of the new Web3 game, Zynga Vice President of Web3 Gaming Matt Wolf said in a statement:
“Our ambition is to empower players through a sustainable Web3 platform full of fun and enduring games. We created Sugartown to appeal to a native Web3 market, but with the ambition of scaling much wider over time while we build a passionate and engaged community of holders we hope will enjoy this experience as much as we loved bringing it to life.”
As far back as 2021, Zynga had revealed plans to delve into the blockchain gaming verse. Following last year’s acquisition of the gaming company by Take-Two Interactive, Zynga’s commitment to growing a path in Web3 gaming is now taking solid shape. This will position the company within a cohort of video game developers that are making an impact in the realm.
